Student Chapter: Geovani’s Message II
First of all, I would like to congrats you on the job well done for the first half of this year. I really enjoyed reading any of your activity reports as well as your End Year Annual Reports.
There are 3 things I would like to point out in this message:
- L.Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grants
- Activity Funding
- Grant-in-Aid Program
L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grants
AAPG has just announced the L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant Program for the 2007-08 school year. The purpose of the grant is to support educational expenses of undergraduate geosciences students and their departments or student chapter. I wouldn’t talk to much about it here, but you should access this link http://students.aapg.org/chaptergrant.cfm for complete explanation about this program along with its requirements. You can also find the official invitation from AAPG just right in this web page.
Note:
To be eligible for the grant Student Chapter must:
- be in establishment for exactly one year from the date of deadline submission to qualify for grant (an official chapter since December 15, 2006)
- have at least 9 members who are AAPG student members, with member numbers
- have at least one faculty sponsor, who maintains Active or Associate member status in AAPG
- have an executive committee for the chapter (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer)
- hold at least one meeting per month throughout the school year
- have filed at least two reports with AAPG Headquarters, one in December, and one at the end of the school year
Activity Funding
As you might have been aware, AAPG Asia Pacific Region financially supports your activity on courses, field trips, seminars, etc with appropriate budget request (sample attached). Proposed budgets will be assessed by AAPG Asia Pacific Executive Committee members based on their benefits to the chapters and fund availability.
Example of Student Chapter’s activities funded by AAPG Asia Pacific this year:
- China Univ of Petroleum (for VGP and Field Trip)
- China Univ of Geosciences (for VGP and Field Trip)
- University of Indonesia (IPA Conference)
- Trisakti University (IPA Conference)
- Student from Bangladesh (AAPG Conference)
Grants-in-Aid
The purpose of the AAPG Foundation’s Grants-in-Aid program is to foster research in the geosciences. Grants are made to provide financial assistance to graduate students (currently enrolled in Masters or Ph.D. programs) whose thesis research has application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues. Grants range from $500 to $2,000 and are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student’s thesis work, such as field work, laboratory analyses, etc. Please hit on http://www.aapg.org/foundation/gia/about.cfm to earn a complete information on this program and requirements.
Keep up the good work fellows…..
Best Regards,
Geovani C Kaeng
