Mr. Awang is famous for his brand-new and out of the box concept of geology of Indonesia. He has many publications with Indonesia Petroleum Association and Indonesia Association of Geologists.

This course is the biggest event in their chapter’s activity this year, with two hundred participants. Attending this course were students and professionals from all across Indonesia.

            Concurrent with the AAPG President, Dr. Paul Weimer’s Asia Tour in Kuala Lumpur, a workshop entitled ‘The Petroleum Industry in the Next Decade – An Overview to the Science, Technology and AAPG’ was organized by the AAPG University of Malaya Student Chapter on the 14^th September 2011 at Hotel Singgahsana, Petaling Jaya. This workshop which was kindly sponsored by Talisman Energy Inc. and Murphy Oil Co., was free to all students and members of industry. The purpose of this workshop was to give students a strong sense of the spectacular technology which geoscientists work with, the future of the profession, and what can be expected in careers in the oil and gas industries.

            The event received great response with an overwhelming number of 200 participants from students of University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Petronas, including lecturers and some members of industry. The workshop started at 10.00 am and ended at 3.30 pm, with a short lunch break at 1.00 pm.

Dr. Paul Weimer is the current AAPG President and also the Professor, Bruce D. Benson Endowed Chair, Director of Energy and Minerals Applied Research Centre and a consulting geologist at the University of Colorado. He divided the workshop into three themes each. In the first exercise, it is themed as ‘Rejuvenating Old Fields’. Dr. Weimer talked about conventional and unconventional reservoirs with example of 3D seismic interpretation from a meteorite impact field in North Dakota. The next exercise with the theme ‘Frontier Basins: Deepwater Basins’ was about the exploration for conventional reservoirs and the identification of deepwater fields in the northern Gulf of Mexico which is characterized by extensive salt features. The various trapping styles of the reservoir were discussed by looking at the seismic profile of the area. Lastly, the final exercise of the workshop was on ‘Unconventional Reservoirs: Tight-Gas Sandstone Reservoirs’. A basin-centered gas accumulation in Piceance Basin in northwestern Colorado was used as an example to demonstrate the concepts, using wireline logs.

Before ending the workshop, Prof. Weimer also discussed the future of technology and the demand for unconventional resources. He also inspired the participants on the future career as geologists and what to expect at work. Finally, he emphasized the importance for students joining AAPG and remaining members throughout their careers.

Interested in applying for a Grant?

The purpose of the AAPG Foundation’s Grants-in-Aid program is to foster research in the geosciences. Grants are made to provide financial assistance to graduate students (currently enrolled in Masters or Ph.D. programs) whose thesis research has application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues.  Grants are based on merit, and in part, on the financial needs of the applicant. Although the focus of the program is the support of qualified candidates for Masters or equivalent degrees, qualified doctoral candidates are also encouraged to apply.

Factors weighed in selecting successful applicants include: the qualifications of an applicant as indicated by past performance; originality and imagination of the proposed project; support of the department in which the work is being done; and perceived significance of the project to petroleum, energy minerals and related environmental geology.

Grants range from $500 to $3,000 and are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student’s thesis work, such as field work, laboratory analyses, etc. Funds are NOT to be used for capital equipment, conferences, salaries, tuition, room and board during the school year.  More information at  http://foundation.aapg.org/gia/howto.cfm

Chuck Caughey and Dharmawan Samsu visited University of Padjadjaran, Jatinangor, Indonesia on 28 Apr 2009. It was attended by 29 participants and 1 faculty. Chuck presented a technical talk on “Large Gas Accumulations in Fractured Basement, South Sumatra Basin” and Chuck and Dhar conducted a presentation and discussion on geoscience careers.

Chuck visited Trisakti University, Jakarta, Indonesia on 29 Apr 2009. It was attended by 98 students, 2 faculty, and 1 dean. Chuck presented a technical talk on “Finding New Oil in Old Oil Fields” followed by a presentation and discussion on geoscience careers.

A wonderful experience; first, I was superbly hosted by University and provide fantastic accommodation to me and my family. Secondly, before the lecture I gave a short test to the senior students of Geology which was simply done to evaluate the present thinking trends among students about petroleum and about their current affairs knowledge that are one way or other affecting our lives and economies of the country. ( OPEC role, oil price, world reserves, export of oil etc)

At this point I also discussed about student membership in American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and describe the benefits of its members. Sindh University is presently having a student Chapter of Pakistan Association of Petroleum Geoscientist (PAPG ) an affiliated organization with AAPG since 1994.

About 100 students and 15 members from Geology faculty attended the lecture including very able Professor Dr Perveen Usmani (top formanifera micropaleontologist) and Dr Solangi (reknown top sedimentologist and director of the center).

Many intriguing questions were asked by students and faculty members about petroleum geology, business side of the petroleum and future career prospects for students in country and else where. I sincerely hope that Sindh University will play a key role in boosting geological education in the country and will provide good research opportunities to the petroleum, agriculture and civil engineering industry through their well equipped state of the art laboratories.

Dr and Mrs Solanagi also arranged a very fine dinner and lunch for which I am very grateful for their warm hospitality and all the care he gave during my visit. Before the lecture, in lines with local tradition, a Sindhi Ajrak (a red and black shawl of cotton of local tradition) was presented whereas at the end of lecture a Shield of the Sindh University was given to me as well. Appreciating my hosts kindness I have also given couple of gifts to Dr Solanagi and Dr Perveen Usmani.

2008 AAPG Asia Pacific Distinguished Lecture Tour

As a Regional Lecturer for AAPG, I visited and spoke at the University of Malaysia Sabah in Kota Kinabalu and the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur where I was graciously hosted by Dr. Felix Tongkul and Dr. Dennis Tan and their students. I also was fortunate to also address the Geological Society of Malaysia. I presented the following talks: “The Kinabalu Fault and Its Influence of the Distribution of Hydrocarbons in the Greater Kinabalu Field, Sabah, Malaysia,” Transverse Segmentation of the Baram Basin and Northern Borneo: An Alternate Model for Oligo-Miocene Subduction,” and “The Truth-Lie-Ignorance Ternary Diagram in Geology.

My experience as a Regional Lecturer was extremely enriching, especially the opportunity to visit with students afterward to convey my enthusiasm for the earth sciences, answer question on the “working life” of a geologist, and to encourage them to follow their passions, wherever those may lead. Spending several hours around The Geological Map of Borneo Island with Robert Tate, Charles Hutchison, Harry Doust and Dennis Tan discussing controversies and listening to some of their working experiences was a once in a lifetime highlight. I was inspired to get back to Borneo for more field-based research, as seen below. Thank you gentlemen and thank you AAPG.

Biography:

Andrew currently works in the Global New Ventures Team for Shell International. He has over 20 years experience in the oil and gas business, including 16 years with Shell in roles ranging from production seismology to frontier exploration. Andrew holds advanced degrees in Geology from the University of Oregon and the University of Oklahoma. As an explorer, Andrew has directly contributed to discoveries in the United States, Angola, Nigeria, Africa, Australia, and Malaysia. In addition to his experiences as a petroleum geologist, Andrew has also worked as a gold prospector, asbestos petrographer, and industrial minerals geologist. As time permits, his present research focus on the geological history of Borneo includes projects on regional tectonics, the paleogeography of the Crocker fan, and the petrology of the Usun Apau Volcanics. Andrew is a member of the Geological Society of America and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He has served an advisory board College of Geosciences for the University of Oklahoma and currently serves on AAPG’s Grants-In-Aid Committee.

SPE Student Chapter, Kazakhstan British Technical University (KBTU) Almaty, Kazakhstan, 12 February 2009

I have delivered a lecture about three dimensional geological studies and how the data was used to design the horizontal well in a shallow structural trap from Jurassic sandstone reservoirs where due to surface constraints vertical well was less feasible to drill. As a pre drill planning, well trajectory was modeled with the combination and integration of nearby wells logs data, 3D geological model and structural modelling (3D seismic) and during drilling model was monitored with the help of LWD and MWD data. This close monitoring allows to steer the bottom hole assembly and bit into the target pay zone. The successful drilling results brought in at least 6 times higher flow rate of hydrocarbon than vertical well.

The case study was about a field in North Ustyurt Basin western part of Kazakhstan.

SPE Student Chapter, Kazakstan National Technical University (KNTU), Almaty, Kazakhstan, 17 February 2009

This was my first visit to KNTU and I found it very different than usual, it was more intercative, two way communicational. More talking with group of students than simple lecture.

Students were keen to know about my past professional experience and about myself; also about petroleum industry growth in the region, cultural and political issues of the region, etc. I have shared my views with them and they did with me and others

Students asked number of questions about petroleum education specially about countries and universities known for higher education, opportunities for girls, job propsects in the region and globally. I enjoyed answering intelligent questions of the students.

I think students of KNTU are brilliant and they have been trying hard and eager to keep up themselves with latest technologies and catch up what was left to be known.

Students asked for a frequent visits to their university which I promised to do so whenever time permits.

My Comments: I realized the contents of the talk in KBTU were bit advance for many junior students; I will try to keep it simple in future, though I have given two earlier talks in KBTU about career in petroleum industry which were more simpler. SPE KBTU section has specifically asked me for this topic as I have delivered in SPE Section technical talk in December 2008
