In January 31th 2009, Padjadjaran University Student Chapter of AAPG conducted a course was given by Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata with the tittle “Basin Concepts And Basin Classification In Indonesia”. The speaker presented the excellent and interested topic.

Taking a picture of participants and Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata

At the beginning, Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata explained us about type of the basin. Basin divided into four category. There is Physiographic Basin, Structural Basin, Sedimentary Basin, Petroleum Basin. Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata also explained about the differences between each of the type of basin. In Indonesia there are sixty basins but not all of the basin content of petroleum because all basin only viewed from physiographic side. The lecture take a break for lunch and praying time.

Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata explained about plate tectonic concept and Sedimentary basin

After break time, lecture was continued to the 2nd session. Mr.Prof. R . P. Koesoemadinata explained about The Concept of Tectonic Plate and Basin Evaluation.

Sedimentary basin have characteristic ,the most important feature of a sedimentary basin is the depositional interface which during certain time intervals is partly or entirely above or below sea-level and the sedimentary basin also can be partly or entirely involved in tectonic activity, such as folding, faulting and uplift to form a mountain range. A sedimentary basin does not necessarily have the shape of a geomorphologic basin, it could be a slope (clinoform) but is typically characterized by tectonic subsidence relative to its surrounding area. The basin margin is characterized by the wedge-out of sedimentary strata. In general a sedimentary basin is a tectonic feature.

Sedimentary basin where petroleum has been generated and accumulated in economic quantities not all sedimentary basin is capable of generating petroleum called Petroleum Basin. In general a petroleum basin is also a coal basin, but not all petroleum basins are coal basins and vice versa.

About hydrocarbon potential , only sedimentary basin with sufficient sedimen thickness, with an excess 2000 meter thickness. But, however thickness only doesn’t guarantee the generation of hydrocarbons.

All of participant stared at Mr. Koesoemadinata’s explanation

To understand what the sedimentary basin that explain above, we should know the Plate Tectonics. But, unfortunately almost people misunderstood about the difference of Plate and Crust. Plates is a rheological concept of a rigid outer sphere of the earth~ the lithosphere. And the other side, Crust is a mineralogical concept of the outer part of the earth and consists of: Continental Crust (granitic, formerly called sial) and Oceanic Crust (basaltic, formerly called sima).
Several basin classification based on Plate Tectonic have been proposed as:

INTRA-CRATONIC/CONTINENTAL BASINS

Stable

Divergence (extensional)

Convergence (compressional)

Transvergence (trans-tensional)

CONTINENTAL MARGIN BASINS

Active continental margins (convergence/transvergence)

Passive continental margins (divergence/stable)

OCEANIC BASINS

Stable Oceanic Basins

Diverging Oceanic Basin

Converging Oceanic Basins

Transvergin Oceanic Basins

CONCLUSIONS

Usage of the term basin is confusing (a mixture of physiographic, sedimentary and structural basins)

To have a hydrocarbon potential outlining Indonesian basin map should be based on the occurrence of sediment thickness.

Usage of the term basin, subbasins, troughs, lows is not consistent

Indonesian basins are composite or poly-basins

For composite basins the term basinal areas is suggested

Whenever possible the term basin should be restricted to a single basin type according to plate-tectonic classification.

In the end of this lecture, the activity leader of Student Chapter AAPG Padjadjaran University gave an appreciation for Mr. Prof. R.P. Koesoemadinata support, energy, enthusiasm toward student development, by giving the memento. And then took a picture together in front of faculty.

The AAPG Student Chapter University of Malaya which is running on the third year since establishment has worked on another few projects during the early of the academic year. The dedicated and passion executives had bring in some personnel from Oil and Gas Industry for delivering a overview of technology as well as opens up opportunities for the members asking some question about the future career. These beneficial talks are the best socializing ground for students to be closest to Oil and Gas Field. These programs which had already plan before the school semester starts had hit the objective of being a platform for members to learn and understand the importance of certain aspects being a future geologist. Not only are those, students are taught how to write an adequately attractive resume in order to attain a job. The Chapter aims to equipped members in term of knowledge and writing skills. Being the president of the chapter, I am glad to receive the good responses from the members itself and also the support from various company in terms of sponsoring of money or technical aid. The early confirmation of the companies on sponsors items speed up the progress of the whole arrangement and preparations. By this means, the capability of committee is polished and we learn along the process of organizing the events.

There is generally at least one event going on each month starting of the new semester in July until October. November is not taken into account as it is a fairly busy month with final exams. On July, Enrollment Campaign is done on the third week. Exhibition and meeting is held to introduce the Chapter to the new undergraduates and postgraduates. At the same time, we answered all the enquiries and explained the up-coming event for the whole academic year. Students that are interested had sign up as student member and this is handled by the membership committee. For now, we have 100 members.

In August, we invited Dr. H.D. Tjia to be the distinguished lecturer in the distinguished lecture program. The title of the talk is ‘The State of Geological Stress In Malaysia And Adjacent Region’. Although the talk is a short one in the evening, it is worthwhile for us to understand the structural stress around this region. We appreciate Dr Tjia with his sharing of the topic.

Distinguish Lecturer: Souvenir giving Dr. H.D. Tjia

In the fasting month, technical talk has been organized. This time we successfully invited 3 speakers from various company such as Talisman (Malaysia), Halliburton and Schlumberger. The talk ended up with a fast-breaking dinner with the speakers. The overall sponsor for the day would be Talisman.

Technical Talk Participants

During October, career talk of Orogenic Group attracted students not only from our department but also students from the engineering discipline. This event is early confirmed on July and is a successful one. The interesting part of the talk would be ‘How to write an effective CV’ to oil company. The objective of this career talk is fulfilled as generally it enlightens the students what is Orogenic Group all about. Secondly, it opens another alternative for students considering this company as their future career after graduation. The talk ended up with photo session in the department.

Career Talk Program

There is no activity going on November. But basically we organized a visit to the up-coming IPTC conference in KL Convention Centre (3-5 December 2008). Forms were collected and during November, I sent them up to the registration department of IPTC for processing. Students have free admission. There are a total of 38 students attended the conference and received a handful of information from various oil and gas company including the Arabian company, as well as the multinational company. IPTC is also sponsored by AAPG.

The coming half year we would plan to organize a career talk form Talisman, Geointro 2009 and PGCE Exhibition. If there is time, I hope that; we can organize a visit to the Geological Museum in Ipoh, Perak State.

From September to October 2008, there were three lectures had been successfully conducted in the “Integrated and Continually lecture” (ICL) activity. Below is the highlight of ICL:

1.	INTRODUCTION TO SEISMIC SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY
Date: September 6, 2008

Before we entered to Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy, Mr. Scott gave a little review about reflection seismology. We could use Reflection seismogram as a tool in three scales, like Regional, Sub-Regional, and Local. From Regional we could use it to interpret all of region (mega), Sub-Regional for individual basin (like Basin Geometry), and Local to interpret structure.

Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy reconstructs Paleogeography and Geology History. From there, we could know about Petroleum System, the geologic risk to find hydrocarbon (likes source rock, reservoir, seal rock, burial/term, trapping, and critical moment). The important thing we must know that seismic reflection couldn’t always become as stratigraphic time line, for example, in carbonate build up in clastic compacted. Sometimes we could see that the carbonate would make the layers like clastic layers.

Mr. Stephen Scott was explaining to participants

Beside that, we also learned about “seismic relation” and “seismic shapes and pattern rounded”. Seismic relation was like onlap, downlap, toplap, and erosional truncation. We used it to know and to paint the sequence (usually we use red or yellow pencil to paint it).

One of participant of lecture was presenting about her seismic section

2.	SEISMIC SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY: PRINCIPLE OF SYSTEM TRACK ANALYSIS
Date: September 20, 2008

In this lecture, Mr. Scott introduced how to analyze the system track in order to interpret the sequence stratigraphy in the seismic data. Firstly, Mr. Scott gave some introduction about sequence stratigraphy. They were about sequences, parasequences, maximum flooding surfaces, sequence surfaces in seismic record data and the relationship with the change of sea level.

Mr. Scott Lecture

Mr. Scott also told which part onlap, downlap, and toplap in seismic record data. These variables were important to analyze the system track of the stratigraphy sequences in the seismic record data. The system track was built in parasequence of the stratigraphy units. And the sequences were composed by the system track itself. The sequence stratigraphy gave predictable succession of stratigraphy units which were related to reservoir, seal, and source rock of the hydrocarbon. The application to the seismic record data would be discussed more detail on the next lecture with the seismic record data that he gave in this lecture. Mr. Scott also gave us a task to interpret where the downlap, toplap, onlap are in the seismic section as our homework during Lebaran Day.

3.	PRINCIPLE OF SEISMIC SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY-PART II
Date: October 18, 2008

After holiday “Idul Fitri”, Mr. Stephen Scott continued our lecture by explaining about Principle of Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy. We started the lecture from analysis the Systems Tracts, and also we were showed about Exxon Method of Systems Tracts. The systems tracts were like low stand systems tract, high stand systems tract, transgressive system tract, and the other. After that, our lecture did more practice with seismic.

Mr. Scott was explaining the seismic line to the students

From seismic, we learned again about Geometry of sequence and stratigraphy relation. We practice it from three seismic data which Mr. Scott gave to us. After that, we tried to interpret the seismic section by our self, and Mr. Scott walked away to look our work. He said if we want to interpret the seismic we should do it firstly from the bottom line.

From our seismic section, Mr. Scott explained about one of sequence pattern, namely progradation. In pattern of progradation, we could get an imagination that area has a rainy season. So, the depositional would be in river. That’s a little interpretation about our seismic line.

After we practiced the seismic, he explained again the petroleum system elements. But, he just explained it a little, and he promised to us that he would explain more about that on the next lecture.

Mr. Scott was explaining the seismic line to a student
