University of Indonesia (Indonesia)

In this global competition, university teams analyze a dataset (geology, geophysics, land, economics, production infrastructure, and other relevant materials) in the eight (8) weeks prior to their local competition. Each team delivers their results in a 25 minute presentation to a panel of industry experts. Students have the chance to use real technology on a real dataset, receive the feedback from an industry panel, have the opportunity to impress potential employers in the audience, and the chance to win cash awards for their schools. The industry panel of judges will select the winning team on the basis of the technical quality, clarity and originality of its presentation. The judging will take place over 1-3 March 2011. We wish the Teams all the best!

Sign up by 30 July to present at the
in the first AAPG Asia Pacific Region GTW

The AAPG Asia Pacific Region will present a GTW (Geosciences Technology Workshop) in Singapore, 27-29 October 2010. The theme is “Pore Pressure Prediction: Special Focus — Asia Pacific”.

Be a part of this inaugural event by signing up to be a speaker!

The Asia-Pacific region is an area of extensive opportunity and capacity for growth in oil and gas production. However, the industry faces many challenges in finding and developing the region’s significant resources. The Asia-Pacific region contains some of the world’s deepest and most rapidly formed basins and associated high magnitude overpressures. Such extreme overpressures pose significant hazards for drilling, exploration, completions and production.

Experts on the theme are invited to make a presentation at the Workshop, or consider chairing a session. Presentations may be based on work you have previously published or can be new work. Submit a brief outline or Speaker nominations to Adrienne Pereira
before 30 July 2010.

Possible Session Themes:

Pore Pressure Prediction: Asia-Pacific Case Studies

Origin and Petrophysics of Overpressure

Pore Pressure Prediction in High Pressure and High Temperature Settings

Rock Mechanics Considerations for Production Geology

Pore Pressure and Fluid Flow in Fractured Heterogeneous Reservoirs

Completion and Production Issues in Over-Pressured Reservoirs

Case Studies in Exploration and Development

Lessons Learned

Using Seismic in Pore Pressure Prediction

The format of the GTW involves brief presentations followed by informal discussions. The goal is to provide the kind of venue for small-group discussion with a combination of practitioners and theories, across disciplines (geochemistry, geology, geophysics, engineering), that are not currently readily available.

In order to do this, I would be grateful if you would provide me with a wish list of topics for education programmes, as well as information on possible presenters who can provide expertise for teaching courses for AAPG in this region.

To submit your Wish List: Please fill out this form and I will compile the data received and see how we can best fulfill members’ needs.

In addition, if you have a course you would like to teach yourself, we would love to see a proposal from you in order to build a collection of courses available in this region.

Our website provides guidelines for submitting Course Proposals. You can choose from Short Courses, Field Seminars, Schools, GeoTours, or Training on Demand. Proposals for courses to be considered as AAPG offerings should be sent to the Education Director and/or the Education Manager at AAPG. They are evaluated by the Education Department, as well as the Education Committee of AAPG as to content, timeliness, and potential audience appeal. A response is then given to the instructor once a decision about the proposal has been made. If the course is approved, it will most likely be offered in the calendar year following acceptance.

There are two formats to choose from:

Conceptual: If you have                an idea or “concept” about a course you’d like to                teach, and want to find out if the committee would be  receptive,                you can submit a                proposal to                give us a brief outline of your idea;

Formal: If you have a full course you’ve developed and/or given before, and can include a lot more detail, you can submit the formal proposal. If you initially submit a “concept proposal”, and the committee likes your idea, you will most likely be asked to provide more detail by completing the “formal proposal” form for review by the entire committee.

I look forward to your input in making the AAPG presence strongly felt in our region.

Sincerely,

Adrienne Pereira

The winning team from the Asia Pacific region – the China School of Petroleum in Beijing – was flown to New Orleans to compete against the winners of the other regions. They made their presentation in front of the International panel of Judges and while they did not emerge in the top three, the experience they gained was wonderful. They got to meet other teams, Judges and many other industry specialists at the AAPG Annual Convention, 2010. We congratulate them again, and look forward to 2011 where we hope to have many more teams participating.

Second place went to the team from the University of Calgary, Canada, who won US$10,000. The King Fahd University, representing the Middle East Region came in third, winning US$5,000.

The remaining nine finalists each earned $1,000 in scholarship funds for their respective schools plus individual medals for themselves as IBA finals participants. The finals teams were (alphabetical order):

* Africa Region – Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
With oil & gas, services, and consulting companies showcasing their technological advancements and achievements, this will be a good venue for AAPG to introduce our presence in the Asia Pacific area.

As the newly appointed AAPG representative for the Asia Pacific section, I will be present at the booth, together with other members as well as our AAPG student chapter from the University of Malaya. We aim to highlight to the industry the many services that AAPG offer, among them, our educational and training programmes. All information on the show can be found online.

We look forward to welcoming you to the event; we are at Booth B5A. I hope to meet many AAPG members then; do come and support AAPG!

Best regards,
