Join us in welcoming AAPG President Paul Weimer when he visits Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore as part of his Asia Pacific tour. Paul is the Director of Energy and Minerals Applied Research Centre at the University of Colorado. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the world’s largest professional geological society.

Paul will meet with students and young professionals in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, where he will present a half-day course free of charge to give students a strong sense of the spectacular technology with which geoscientists work, the future of their profession, and what they can expect in their careers. Members of the industry are strongly encouraged and welcome to attend and support the students.

Download Paul Weimer Tour Poster

2011 Tour dates (Timings include lunch break)

Bangkok: 3 September, 10.00 am – 3.30 pm, Chulalongkorn University

Bandung: 9 September, 10.00 – 15.00, Bandung Institute of Technology

Surabaya: 12 September, 8.00 am – 12.00 pm, Sepuluh-Nopember Institute of Technology

Kuala Lumpur : 14 September, Singgahsana Hotel, Petaling Jaya (note venue change); 10.00 am – 3.15 pm

Singapore : 16 September

Themes of the 4-hour short course with accompanying exercises and a final lecture

The petroleum industry in the next decade: an overview to the science, technology and AAPG

Rejuvenation of old fields: conventional (and now unconventional) accumulations — a 3D seismic interpretation from a meteorite impact field. The seismic is stunning and the interpretation is quite challenging.

Frontier exploration in conventional accumulations — identification of deepwater fields in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Unconventional resources: tight gas sandstones, BCGA — a wireline log exercise from a basin-centered gas accumulation (Piceance Basin) to demonstrate the concepts.

The future: assumptions (supply, demand), technology (seismic, how we interpret), more on unconventional resources.

We’ll also take a look forward at AAPG in 2035 and discuss questions such as where is our industry headed? How can you expect to work (e. g. evolving interpretation technologies, evolving drilling and completion techniques, new play concepts)? Where will you work? And, most importantly, why it is critical to join AAPG and stay a member throughout your career?

Singapore, (re-scheduled) possibly 15-16 March 2012

The goal of this workshop is to improve understanding of the distribution and quality of unconventional hydrocarbon plays throughout Asia. With a target geotechnical audience, this forum is intended to cover exploration for, and not marketing of, unconventional assets. The workshop will look at unconventional resource play mapping, estimate and analysis, sharing experience and ideas among the players in Asia during this very early phase of exploration to best use limited studies and conventional data to reduce risk. Proposed sessions will include Shale Gas Plays, Coal Seam Gas Plays and Other Alternate Hydrocarbon Plays for China, India and Southeast Asia, in detail and within the context of global analogues. Read More...

The Asia Pacific Region saw a successful conclusion to its inaugural Geosciences Technology Workshop (GTW) which took place on the 28-29 October 2010 in Singapore. The GTW theme of “Pore Pressure and Related Issues – Special Focus: Asia Pacific” was particularly pertinent as the Asia-Pacific region contains numerous rapidly formed and highly overpressured basins and is an area in which pore pressure prediction is particularly challenging. The GTW was attended by 88 delegates and contained 23 presentations from industry experts, among whom were Keynote Presenters Richard Swarbrick of GeoPressure Technology UK and Nader Dutta of Schlumberger USA. Running alongside the GTW were two short courses on Pore Pressure and Petroleum Geomechanics, taught by Richard Swarbrick and Mark Tingay (University of Adelaide) respectively.

GTW Convenor Mark Tingay

The technical program covered a broad range of topics on pore pressure, including advances in understanding overpressure generation and distribution, new techniques and technologies for pore pressure prediction, and case studies on pore pressures and their prediction from throughout Asia and the world. In addition to the high quality technical presentations, the GTW included significant time for interaction and networking during periods of open discussion, speaker questions to the audience, breakout groups and analysis of key issues, problems, opportunities and directions. In particular, the breakout sessions on pore pressure prediction in HP/HT environments and pore pressure problems in deepwater settings stimulated wide ranging and active discussion.

The final GTW wrap-up discussion raised three main issues singled out for specific future focus. The first key issue for future focus is in understanding overpressure generation and, in particular, the significance of overpressure generation by non-disequilibrium compaction mechanisms and how overpressures are redistributed over time. The second major issue raised was the requirement for improvements in pore pressure prediction from seismic data, such as selection of the best prediction methodologies in areas that have overpressure without associated porosity anomalies; the most appropriate seismic velocities to utilise, and; combination with geology and the potential use of frequency-based pore pressure prediction. The final major issue developed from the GTW was the need for improved communication and understanding between geoscientists conducting pore pressure prediction and the users of this data such as drillers and reservoir engineers. In particular, it was demonstrated that conducting pore pressure prediction throughout the life of the well (exploration, well planning, drilling, post-drilling review) and involvement of drillers and reservoir engineers in the prediction process were critical to continuous development of improved practices.

This inaugural Asia-Pacific GTW enabled a diverse range of geoscientists to undertake the first focussed discussions on pore pressure and form the foundations for significantly improved pore pressure prediction in this challenging region. We hope that this will be the first of many successful GTWs held in the Asia-Pacific Region.

In this course the Cenozoic geological development of Southeast Asia will be discussed in the context of a regional plate tectonic model for Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. The course is centered on Indonesia and Malaysia but discusses a wider area including Indochina, the Philippines and West Pacific, New Guinea and the Northwest Shelf of Australia. The course focuses on the Cenozoic but also discusses the development of the region from the early Mesozoic which is essential for understanding the Cenozoic tectonics and why the region deforms as it does.

Robert Hall is Professor of Geology and Director of the SE Asia Research Group at Royal Holloway University of London. Since 1984 he has worked in SE Asia, mainly in Indonesia, carrying out field-based research supported mainly by industrial consortia with postgraduate research students and post-doctoral researchers. These studies have been the basis for computer animated plate tectonic reconstructions of SE Asia and the SW Pacific for the Cenozoic.
