Dear AAPG Asia Pacific Student Chapter Leaders and University Reps,
Imperial Barrel Award Program (IBA)
AAPG is pleased to announce an exciting new career-development program for geoscience graduate students. It is called the Imperial Barrel Award Program or IBA. IBA is a wonderful program in which students work in teams, analyze real geologic data, then give prospect presentations before a panel of petroleum industry judges. Teams of five students per team compete for trophies and cash prizes.

IBA Global Competition at AAPG Annual Meeting
At the AAPG Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, in April, 2008, we will hold a global IBA competition. For this competition, we invite one team from each AAPG Region and one team from each AAPG Section to compete. Each team will be comprised of five (5) graduate students and one faculty chaperone. The Asia Pacific Region will hold a regional Imperial Barrel Award competition among teams from universities and AAPG student chapters. The 1st Place team from regional IBA competition will compete in the global competition. All travel and hotel expenses for the region team of five students and one faculty chaperone will be paid by AAPG – at no cost to the team.
For the 2008 IBA competition only, two additional schools are invited to send a team to compete in the global IBA competition: Imperial College London (in honor of their founding of the Imperial Barrel competition) and University of Aberdeen (in honor of their 1st Place award at the 2007 IBA competition). As a result, there will be a total of 14 teams competing at the 2008 AAPG Annual Meeting.
IBA Asia Pacific Region Competition
In order to select a team to represent the Asia Pacific Region, a regional IBA competition will be organized during the time period from February to mid-March, 2008. Students will analyze the data and prepare their oral presentation on DVD that will be assessed by Asia Pacific Judging panels. They are:
